1 minute read | Remy Brunelli Brondex, Social TV Producer | June 2018

Whether you call it football, soccer, or “the World Game”, there is no denying the FIFA World Cup 2018 has captured Australia’s attention with a strong performance from the Australian team as well as many exciting moments as the world’s best view for the iconic golden trophy. Twitter and Facebook have exploded with action as fans take to their second screens with 676,500 total interactions so far, despite most matches being broadcast into the early hours of the morning.

Naturally, Socceroos matches have caused the most buzz across social platforms locally. Saturday 16 June’s Australia vs. France match was the most popular, with tweets per minute peaking at 2,200 at 9:19pm when Mile Jedinak scored for the Socceroos. The total number of social interactions for the match reached 171,300 as fevers ran high for the “roos”.

A total of 409,700 social interactions were exchanged during the Australian teams three matches, with the 25 June Australia vs. Peru match unfortunately bringing the team’s campaign to an end.

Australian treasure Hugh Jackman got in on the action, posting after the Australia vs. France match, resulting in the most social organic Tweet so far with close to 10,000 likes.
