Nielsen Grocery Universe 2014
Every year Nielsen creates an overview of the changes in the grocery world. In our Nielsen Grocery Universe 2014 report, you’ll find the evolution of a number of retailers, the share of store types, as well as regional and international comparisions (comparing the results till the end of 2013).
In Belgium, the most important conclusions from our research are:
- There were 7289 grocery stores in Belgium at the end of 2013, a decrease of 92 stores compared with 2012 and a decrease of 6500 stores compared with 1990.
- Sales of the food universe measured by Nielsen increased by 2.7% to EUR 24.5 billion.
- There was a slight drop in the market share from hard discounters (Aldi and Lidl) and from the F2 channel (medium-sized supermarkets) when comparing 2013 with 2012.
- For the short and long-term, there was a decrease in the number and market share of small grocery stores (F3) as a result of closures.
