Understanding Chinese Consumption

Building A Robust Landscape Of Chinese Demand Through 2025

This report was developed and published by the Demand Institute, a non-profit think tank jointly operated by The Conference Board and Nielsen.

China is the second largest economy in the world, and will soon be the largest. Discussion of the future of the Chinese economy and its role in the global economy, and of Chinese consumers in particular, abounds in the media, among business leaders, and in policy research. Still, the data that we have about current Chinese consumption – much less how behavior is likely to change over the next several years – is lacking in critical ways.

The goal of this research program is to provide a more robust landscape of Chinese consumption, both currently and through 2025. To do so, we will bring together multiple data sources and expert perspectives, building comparative and “bottom up” projections of Chinese consumption. We will do so across regions of China and across types of consumption, and also across different consumer groups.
