Nielsen’s insights impact businesses around the world. Our Technology and Engineering team is a key player in bringing high-quality and up-to-date data to our clients every day. We are  looking for a motivated Software Engineering Director to join our Digital Ads team. The role of the Software Engineering Director includes the following areas of responsibility (listed in order of importance):

 

People Leadership

This is the most important part of the job. You will be responsible for making sure morale is high, people are fulfilled with the work that they do, and that they’re challenged long-term. Tactically, a leader should focus on: 

  • Team composition (hiring & recruiting)
  • Setting and managing expectations (intra-team & broader team)
  • Career guidance and planning 
  • Maximizing the strengths of one’s associates; deploying associates in situations where they will be able to apply their strengths
  • Coaching associates to navigate their weaknesses
  • Correcting poor performance
  • Building strong relationships with peers affording the ability to lead without authority 

 

Technical Leadership

  • Ensuring we build excellence into our products
    • Asking a ton of questions
    • Challenging assumptions
    • Challenging the status quo
  • Meeting deliverables
  • Defining and meeting standards
  • Adapting best practices
  • Decision-making
    • Architecture and design decisions (when necessary)
    • Tie-breaker when consensus is not achieved

Business Management

  • Budgeting
  • Cost optimization
  • Well-versed and engaged in our product strategy & roadmap
  • Meeting business objectives (where strategy meets execution)

 

Required Skills 

  • Experience (5+ years) designing and developing microservices architectures
  • Track record of building highly scalable and resilient, 24×7 web applications
  • Ability to analyze and tackle performance and scalability problems
  • Expert object-oriented and functional Java development skills (10+ years)
  • Experience designing high volume, high throughput data warehousing solutions
  • Deep understanding of Agile and DevOps development processes and supporting tools (TDD, CI/CD, etc.)
  • Familiarity with Immutable Infrastructure and Infrastructure as Code (Terraform a big plus)
  • Experience with the Amazon Web Services ecosystem (more specifically ECS/EKS, Redshift, RDS, DynamoDB, Kinesis etc) 
  • BS in Computer Science, Math, or equivalent (MS or Phd a plus)
