Asian Games 2018 Events Provoked The Nationalism of TV Viewers

Indonesians showed high enthusiasm for the Asian Games Opening Ceremony 2018. Not only stunning the eyes of the world, but the opening event that took place at Gelora Bung Karno Main Stadium also became media spotlight. 11 Indonesian TV  stations simultaneously broadcasted the opening of the biggest sport event in Asia.

Based on Nielsen survey in 11 cities, the average rating of Asian Games 2018 opening event live broadcast on 11 TV stations reached a fairly high number of 14 percent, and reached 57.2 percent share. Uniquely, sports programs that are usually dominated by male audience is dominated by female audience for this particular program.

In terms of viewer profile, the Asian Games opening ceremony 2018 broadcasted live at 7:00. – 9:30 PM was dominated by viewers aged 50 years and above, with 18.8 percent rating; followed by viewers aged 40-49 years with a 15.1 percent rating. In terms of socioeconomic class, rating on Upper Class is 15%, while Middle Class is 13.8% and Lower Class is 13.2%.

Throughout the Asian Games opening ceremony 2018 program, female viewers also showed  higher index compared to male viewers (107 vs 92). Audience enthusiasm in watching the performance of famous artists who participated in the event is expected to be one of the driving factors for the high rating of female viewers (15.1%), compared to male viewers (13%).

The sense of pride and nationalism of the Indonesians were also reflected in the enthusiasm of the audience when watching every match participated by Indonesian athletes in this event. In the week before, Indonesian soccer national team that had started the game caught the attention of the Indonesian soccer lovers. The three initial matches got high ratings and audience shares. The highest was the match of  Indonesia VS Laos with a rating of 9.1% and a share of 37% .

The soccer match between Indonesia and Palestine got 8% rating and 33.2% share; while the Indonesia vs Chinese match got 7.8 percent and 31.1 percent rating and share respectively. Similar to the match of Indonesian vs Hong Kong on August 20 that also received a rating of 9.4% and a high share of 35.6%.

Badminton is a match that is always eagerly awaited by the Indonesians. The badminton match that brought Indonesia team vs Japan became one of the favorites of TV viewers. The match which took place on August 21 reached a rating of 5.5 percent and a share of3.6 percent.

Even though Indonesia had to be satisfied with Silver Medal, the support to Indonesian badminton national team did not fade away. This was reflected in the final match between Indonesia and China that took place on August 22, whereby the match got 7.9% rating and 35.6% share.
